Meditation is not only beneficial for your mind, it also helps soothe your body.
Meditation can help ward off illness and infection. A study followed a group of volunteers who had meditated for eight weeks and people who did not.
Blood tests were taken from both groups after the eight-week period and researchers found
that the group that meditated had higher levels of antibodies produced against the flu viruses.
Where to Start:
Clearly research can back up the biological benefits of daily meditation. So how do you start
meditating? Meditation sounds easy but can be a mental challenge. Try starting with just 5
minutes a day in the morning.
● Allocate undisturbed time in the morning
● Set a timer for 5 minutes
● Sit in a comfortable position with a good posture
● Breath in and count to 1 with your inhalation
● Breath out and count to 2 with your exhalation
● Count to ten and then start again at 1
● When thoughts, worries, or feelings come to distract you (which they will),
acknowledge them and let them pass
● If you feel like you’re getting caught up in the thoughts start again at 1
Tips:
● Start with 5 minutes a day, work your way up to 10 minutes a day, eventually try for
20-30 minutes a day
● Try using an app to start like Headspace or the Smiling Mind for guided meditation
- Play classical music or nature sounds
● Meditate outside
● Meditate at the same time every day
● Journal how you feel before and after your meditation
