Uterine tissue, which is called Endometrium is normally found inside the uterus.
In Endometriosis, this endometrial tissue is found outside the uterus, usually on the fallopian tubes, ovaries and in the lining of the pelvic cavity.
The cause of endometriosis is not known, however, the role of immune system and hormones is suspected.
It usually affects women in their reproductive age, and is rarely seen after menopause. It occurs in 7 to 10% of women of reproductive age.
Causes of Endometriosis
The exact cause of endometriosis is not known. There are various theories that have been put forth, some of which are also the subject of ongoing research.
One theory attributes it to retrograde menstruation, which is a normal phenomenon.
The immune system clears this retrograde menstrual flow and prevents implantation and growth of endometrial cells elsewhere. But, in some women, these cells manage to implant themselves outside the uterus and cause endometriosis.
An excess of estrogen in the body can also cause endometriosis.
Genetics play an important role in the development of Endometriosis. Daughters of patients with endometriosis are at higher risk of developing the disorder.
Increased use of plastic ware for cooking and eating has also been considered as a cause of endometriosis.
